Still have a question? Tweet at him then check out his travel photography on Instagram. Got a question for Geoff? First, check out all the other articles he's written on topics like why all HDMI cables are the same, TV resolutions explained, LED LCD vs. So while HDMI-over-optical isn't new, its continuing reduction in price and potential for an even greater size difference compared to copper could be an interesting trend to keep an eye on as HDMI 2.1 rolls out. The optical cables are available in much greater distances too, it's worth noting. That seems like a lot, until you consider the copper cables are very cheap. HDMI-over-optical cables cost about twice per-foot what the comparable active long-run copper HDMI cables do. The optical technology does seem like it will become a more viable option for long Ultra High Speed cable runs, if the prices keep dropping. It's also worth noting that in the early days of HDMI, many believed longer runs would always require super-thick cables too, and thanks to active cable tech, along with optical and other developments, reasonably thin cables are relatively inexpensive. Now that's just one company, and it's super-early in the HDMI 2.1 era. They'll pull what juice they need from the HDMI connection itself. requiring a change from electrons to photons and back again, they likely wouldn't need any external power. Jackson has said new chip design allows his company to be similar in price, and possibly cheaper, than copper cables. The price of optical HDMI cables has dropped significantly in recent years. However, this potential limitation might not be an issue. Fine for some situations, certainly, but if you're trying to run it around corners or tight spaces, it's going to be a hassle. Looking at some of the cable prototypes at the show, the longer ones were exceptionally thick. In talking with HDMI Licensing, and Ian Jackson from Silicon Line, there's an expectation that it won't be practical to do 48Gbps using traditional copper wires over longer lengths, even just a few meters. A copper cable this length, with similar bandwidth potential, would be several times thicker, likely as wide as one of your fingers. I couldn't have had my shadow in the shot more if I'd tried, and I was trying not to. Go the other way, and make all the parts thick, and it would be like trying to connect your TV and cable box with a garden hose, and not one of those fancy flexible ones either.Ī prototype Ultra High Speed HDMI-over-optical cable from Silicon Line. Too thin, and you won't get anything, or the cable won't be able to transfer really high resolutions. The thinner these strands of copper are, the more signal gets lost over the length of the wire. Other parts, like shielding, can shrink too, but all only to an extent. To keep the overall cable diameter small, so it's bendable and not impossible to use in your house, each of the strands inside has to be kept as small as possible. A handful of spaghetti, if you will, all mashed together with rubber. HDMI cables are actually multiple smaller wires all bundled together. I often use the analogy that bandwidth is like a pipe: big pipe, lots of water, small pipe, less water. But I'd be surprised if we even get a glimpse of something like that before the end of this year. However, the Olympics are in Japan next year, and China in 2022, so it's a safe bet we'll see a way to get 8K to the TV via something external and box-shaped to coincide with those events. Note the increasing thickness on the longer cables. A dependency manager allows you to define what third-party software your project needs without actually having to bring it into your repository. This is one answer that could go on for a long time, but I want to keep it as direct and succinct as possible. Why Composer?Īs I mentioned earlier, why should we bother with something like Composer? Why not bring in all of the components into a single project and manage it from there. If it uses a different stack, then I’ll set up that environment when needed.Īll of that to say, don’t let certain attitudes dissuade you from using particular software because it’s “old” or “feels dated.” Be pragmatic and make smart decisions for you, your clients, and your tools. There are some indications in the box office this year. I also think the fewer of these franchise films audiences see increases the likelihood they see other things, if they have a limited budget. The reason the theatres accept those terms is because these films do well so without them their bottom line is impacted. Is there any practical solutions you think would actually address the issue or is it just cheering failure because you think it would lead to such an outcome? So this still put others at a disadvantage in the traditional movie markets. They just keep churning out more movies until they make more money. The biggest problem is as you say, a few big companies dominating and abusing that position to force studios to only play their movies, so on and so forth, but a lower box office taking isn't going to resolve that core issue. Instead, I will continue to see films that actually have a creative vision, like Anatomy of a Fall as I did last weekend. It's not like Disney actually cares about diverse voices. I can't say the downside of that is greater than the upside of these films not doing well. Yeah, some collateral damage will be had and chuds will claim this failed because it starred women. Why would I want Disney to succeed when they force theatres to overbook their films at the detriment to other smaller films? I was glad to see Quantumania do badly. What has Marvel shown? That it makes soulless corporate garbage, why would this be any different?īecause Disney's attempts at dominating the film industry and driving out other voices is a cancer on it, so yes I'm glad to see when their films are finally failing. The other factor is looking at company and people involved. What other people think? What a surprise, this method actually is somewhat effective. Presumably you don't see every film being made, right? So how do you decide what to see? What the film is about? Not a good method usually. Really I think thats whats been patchy in the MCU post End Game, I think some of the shows(Loki and Moon Knight espeically) have had some effective drama to them but a lot of the films just feel overstuffed to me falling back to generic "blockbuster drama" which is something the MCU at its best was able to do better than.Īntman 3, Shang Chi, Strange 2 and Love And Thunder all follow that pattern for me, not bad films but not films that go the extra mile to make the characters interesting, my guess is The Marvels will be added to that list if/when I watch it. Indeed I actually think keeping Thanos back and just having the Infinity Stones driving the plots probably ended up being a good thing as it helped keep the lead characters drama front and centre. ![]() ![]() Thanos actually had VERY little to do with the MCU before Infinity War, side villian in the first Guardians film was pretty much it. It can be saved if they redo somethings and maybe X-men is good, but right now its in a rut and will continue to spin tires till some direction that grabs peoples attention back comes. They needed to go BIGGGG after Thanos with someone comparable ie Doom, Galactus and they went with things that can be very obscure / confusing to all but the people who devour the comics. Add a dilution of more so-so content and you get the current result. ![]() The bottom line they chose the wrong villain and to go down the path of multiverse and overall direction. The introduction of solid state amplification with DC coupling extended the amplifier low frequency range down a few Hz and hey presto "woofer flapping". When the microgroove LP specification was made in the 1950s amplifiers and speakers did not reproduce below about 40Hz and nobody noticed "woofer flapping" because the amplifier and speaker didn't go that low down the frequency range. If the result is too low change to a cart that has lower compliance that will raise the resonance frequency. If the frequency result is too high change to a cart with higher compliance that will lower the resonance frequency. This is a filter (high-pass filter - stops low frequencies and allows high frequencies) that responds to the. The key word here is dynamic rumble filter. The HiFiNews test disc 2 has a track that permits estimation of the resonance frequency. About 35 years I came across an audio amplifier that had a dynamic rumble filter that reduced turntable rumble on quiet passages, but was turned off when there were load passages. In the Vinyl Engine section TOOLS is a cartridge+arm combination simulator that helps analyze the resonance frequency using the cart compliance values and the arm mass values. The specific intent was to eliminate the sound of turntable rumble and hum caused by the mechanisms of many record changers commonly used in that day and age. The cause is the sub-sonic resonance of the combination of the cart (the spring) and the arm (the weight). Recent advances in wideband amplifier design make it more important than ever before that turntable rumble and other subsonic components caused by record warps. Unlike the subsonic filter, the rumble filter rolled off at a much higher frequency range, starting around 60 hz or even 70 hz. I've recorded two videos, one showing the turntable's cartridge movement/oscillation and another one showing the speaker's driver excursion produced by it:ĭo you think that a record clamp would solve this issue?Ĭan it be a problem of cartridge setup/alingnment? Also, it's "louder" (higher) on the outer tracks. The amount of 'subsonic rumble' varies from one record to another, depending of the flatness of it. I'm afraid that running the system without filtering the output would damage the speakers. ![]() This makes the cartridge and the stylus move up and down, and it creates a subsonic wave (I'd guess around 10 or 15Hz) that is transmitted to the amplifier and then to the speakers. I think that this rumble is caused by the record not being enterely flat. low frequency (subsonic) energy, but also uses a unique Chat to Buy. Until now I didn't care too much about it as the phono preamp that I currently use (ART DJ Pre II) has a rumble filter, but I'd like to upgrade to a better preamp and so this can be a problem if the future preamp doesn't have a rumble filter. I've a "subsonic rumble problem" with my turntable. ![]() ![]() ![]() If the price is rising, there are chances that the price will be above the moving average, and vice versa. In most cases, when the price has been in a tight range for a long time, it will oscillate at the moving average. The next stage is to just look at the chart and identify where it is. ![]() Investors who buy and hold assets for a long period tend to use longer averages like 50-day and 200-day. In most cases, day traders focus on short-term charts. Ideally, a short-term MA like a 15-MA reacts to a price movement faster than a longer average. The next stage is to find the period to use. Some traders focus on the Simple Moving Average while others use the VWMA, EMA, and Weighted Moving Average. The first step to read moving averages is to identify the type of MA to use. ![]() Reading the moving average is a relatively simple process. Arnaud Legoux MA – This MA reduces the challenges that other MAs have by calculating each moving average simultaneously. It is calculated using the least squares regression method. Least Squares Moving Average (LSMA) – The LSMA is a type of MA that minimizes the effect of price outliers. ![]() Volume is an important part of the market since it shows the weighting The VWMA is calculated using the following formula: Sum of (closing price x Volume) / Sum of Volume. This is a type of MA that incorporates both asset prices and volumes. It does not refer to a fixed period but rather takes all the available data series into account. In this, it gives the recent prices an equal weighting to the historic ones. It is a type of EMA in that it applies for a longer period. Like the EMA and VWMA, the goal of the SMMA is to reduce the noise that exists in the SMA. WMA = (P1 * 5) + (P2 * 4) + (P3 * 3) + (P4 * 2) + (P5 * 1) / (5 + 4+ 3 + 2 + 1)Īgain, as you can see below, the WMA tracks the price more closely than the EMA and SMA. In this case, P1 is the current price while P2 is the price one bar ago. The formula for this calculation is as shown below. This is done by multiplying each bar’s price by a weighting factor. It does this by also putting more weight on recent data. Like the EMA, the Weighted Moving Average aims to reduce the noise that exists in the simple average. As shown below, the EMA in red is more reactive than the blue SMA. The final stage is where you calculate the EMA using the multiplier figure. It achieves this by first calculating the SMA and then finding a multiplier. As such, in a 200-day EMA, the recent data tends to have more weight compared to the one that happened 200 days earlier. It does that by putting a priority in the most recent data. The EMA removes the lag that exists in the Simple Moving Average (SMA). The SMA, like other moving averages, is used to identify an asset’s trend, key support and resistance levels, reversals, and stops. As a result, it might not reflect the most recent happenings in an asset. For example, when calculating the 200-day moving average, all days are taken equally. The biggest con is that it takes all periods equally. While the SMA is a good one, it has its own challenges. It is the core of moving averages in that it is calculated by adding the asset price in a certain period and then dividing the total by the periods. The SMA indicator is the most popular type of moving average in the market. Source: Tradingview Types of moving averages Simple moving average (SMA) The chart below shows how the 25-day EMA, SMA, and WMA applied on the Nasdaq 100 index. There are other types of moving averages like the least squares moving averages, hull moving average, and Arnaud Legoux moving average. It assigns a weight to the price as the SMA is being calculated. Smoothed moving averages (SMA) – The smoothed moving average removes the lag by using a longer period to determine the average.Weighted moving averages (WMA) – The WMA removes the lag by discounting the weight of the ‘ancient’ prices of an asset.Exponential moving average (EMA) – The EMA removes the lag in SMAs by prioritising the recent prices.Simple moving average (SMA) – SMA, the most common type of MAs calculates the average price of an asset by the number of periods in that range. There are several types of moving averages. Moving averages map the average price of an asset in a certain period of time. Indeed, they are so popular that they are the foundation of most technical indicators like Bollinger Bands, Envelopes, Average Directional Movement Index (ADX), and MACD, among others.
